We drove to the airport in Manchester, NH at 4 AM. I LOVE living only about 20 minutes from the airport. As I arrived at my gate for my non-stop flight to Las Vegas, the desk clerk announced that we would be making a fuel stop because there were intense winds and well, there was no way were going to make it non-stop. Ugh. 175 MPH winds as a matter of fact. I knew right then we would be having an interesting flight. Little did I know exactly how interesting.

As we sat not moving on the runway, the plane pitched from side to side: Yup, it was windy alright. As the Pilot pushed the power for take-off we slid & skidded back & forth as the wind seemed to hit us from every direction. As the plane attempted to pitch steeply into the air, the wind had other ideas. For the next 10 minutes, I gripped the seat in front of me. The wind was hitting the plane HARD. This was turbulence x 100. I sincerely thought the Pilot would put the plane right back down and abandon the take off. As the plane struggled to gain altitude, the wind knocked us down, sideways, forwards, backwards. People screamed. People gasped. I prayed a lot: and I will be the first to admit that it has been a looooooong while since that has happened.

A flight that normally takes 5 hours and 55 minutes ended up taking just over 7 hours (not including our fuel stop in Chicago, because where else would we stop when it is really windy out? The “Windy City” of course). That take off was a repeat of the Manchester take off. More gasping. More praying (all around, I’m sure).

Well, obviously I made it safely to Vegas. I was greeted by a strung-out cabbie in the long line for cabs. I couldn’t move forward or back, but I sure wish I could have. I got a nice little narrative on my way to the MGM Grand. Cabbie started telling me some of those, “I’ve seen it all and done it all” stories because of course he had! He was a Cabbie in Vegas.

I was missing Seth already. I traveled alone because of previously laid-out plans. I knew I needed to get away and focus totally on work and business without other distractions though so I immediately begin my plan of attack on the Convention classes and trade show upon checking into my room.

The first day (Saturday) I spent at the Spa. I deserved it! Relaxing before what was a crazy week will surely become a tradition. Sunday the Platform Classes kicked off. Since this was my first WPPI, I decided to do as many free things that I could. In retrospect, I really would have loved to have shot on the strip & in the desert, so next year I am definitely going to arrive in Vegas sooner and take a couple of Master Classes and perhaps one of the independent workshops that are offered by the big name Pros.

Oh The Big name Pros! You can rub elbows with the biggest names in photography at WPPI. My heroes are all the old white guys: you know, the ones who have actually used a film camera before digital came around. Robert Evans, a celebrity photographer that makes himself available for 1-on-1 Mentoring which I have greatly benefitted from, David Beckstead who has a 70’s mustache and incredible composition in his work, Joe Bussinick, who’s images are so emotionally moving (as is his own personal story) that it will make even the toughest tough-guy wonder if he should even keep shooting.

I started at 8AM Sunday with a workshop called “Wedding Packages that Sell” by Sal Cincotta. I learned 100% nothing. Sal is a guy that has been in business for 4 years and had a million dollars in sales last year. But his work is not impressive (he starts the class by stating this) and I found him to be full of fluff. Sorry, but I personally believe in photography as an art form and Sal is so far away from this I just couldn’t respect anything he had to say. Sure, he’s proven he is a money maker, but a great photographer, absolutely not (again, he states this several times throughout his presentation so I am not dropping any bombs on anyone here).

As you might imagine this was not a great start to my experience. Thankfully, other speakers such as Sarah Petty, Joe Bussinick, and others were excellent speakers and touched on everything they claimed there were going to. It was a complete revelation to see so many different business models all achieving various levels of success in such a crappy economy.

The trade show kicked off on Monday, and it occupied 2 HUGE conventional halls (you had to actually walk outside the building to travel between the 2 set-ups) full of every major professional printing house, album company, camera brand, and other random booths. It was awesome to be able to sample so many different types of product.

And then there were the parties……..! I took it easy the first few days to ensure 8AM class attendance, but then headed out to the Airplanes & Blazers party at The Rio, which was fun but overpriced and the line for drinks was 45 minutes long. The Pictage Party my last night in town was outrageously fun, as I met up with a couple of fellow NH Photographers Peter Claymen of NH Images and Rebecca & Mike Garone of Garone Photography. We had WAY TOO MUCH FUN! It was hard to comprehend getting on the plane the day after that night out, but I missed my Hubby and little girl so home I flew.

Thankfully, the trip home was one of the smoothest & fastest flights ever. I was happy to be back, but already knew I would extend my stay next year and that WPPI will be an annual pilgrimage from here on out.

I gained a LOT of perspective on this trip. Not exactly what I expected-but exactly what I needed. I’ve already started implementing a lot of what I learned & observed, and I am excited to see how it works for me and my business from here on out.

NH Weddings: Winter BrideScapes®

I headed over to Hollis, NH last week to do some creative concept work. Obviously during the very busy wedding season it is hard to find time. Leala braved the 10 degree temps and we shot at some private locations all around Hollis. There's beautiful orchards, farms, barn, and rolling hills in every direction.

It felt amazing to get out and shoot some spontaneous creative work. Now I am looking forward to WPPI this weekend in Las Vegas!

NH Engagement Session: Hilary & Don

Hilary & Don were referred to me from one of my most recent Clients. From Hilary's first point of contact, she made it clear that they wanted to do something fun, not stiff or pose-y and that they would be up for anything. ANYTHING? I asked? ANYTHING, she confirmed. ;)
So when they arrived wearing sneakers, I didn't fret; I still had every intention of walking them through the snow and taking them sledding. Don is from Texas, so I think this was his first "official" sledding adventure. We were all definitely the oldest kids on the hill, but I think we may have had the most fun.
We started the session on the Green in Amherst; I wanted to keep their toes warm for as long as possible. It was very, very cold. Brrrrrrrrr.

We (Seth) heard the organ in the church being played, so we decided to pop on in. We were granted permission to shoot so we did! And we got warm. This was definitely the first time I'd shot an E-Session in a church. ;)

Once we were all thawed out, we headed to the famous sledding hill at Bragdon Farm. It was PACKED. But, we had the longest and fastest sled. Hilary & Don set a new distance record. Score!

NH Wedding Magazine 2011: Featured Editorial Photography

I had the pleasure of shooting for NH Wedding Magazine's 2011 Edition back in October, when the NH foliage was peaking. We had a great time exploring some of my secret spots. And, as per usual the Cops came by to check us out. This happens on a lot of my shoots. ;)

However because I always get property clearance even in the dense NH forest, they were on their way soon after they arrived. ;)

Kudos to Kristina at NH Wedding Magazine for putting together an awesome, full-sized publication! Whoot!

Ode to 2010

Goodbye 2010........we will miss you!

With a new year comes a new name, and a new focus. Although we will never forget 2010-how could we? We have had featured weddings or images in NH Magazine Bride (BRIDESCAPES FEATURED), NH Wedding Magazine (COVER), Capitol Bride Magazine, Lakes Region Bride Magazine, and our first recognition in a National Publication, Grace Ormond Wedding Style. 2010 was simply incredible!

Our goals for 2011 are purposeful: to continue to provide unrivaled Customer Service for our Clients; to make wedding imagery from each and every wedding we shoot truly exemplify the Couple's personalities and tastes; and to push ourselves creatively so that we can exceed our Clients expectations.

There is nothing more thrilling-or fulfilling than collaborating with our Clients to create stunning, creative, and truly one-of-a-kind images.

We kicked off 2010 on the Dartmouth College Campus up in Hanover, NH at Rollins Chapel and The Hanover Inn with Jennie & James. This wedding is now featured in the new 2011 Edition of NH Wedding Magazine.

It was raining-POURING-when we arrived in Dartmouth. The moment Jennie & James walked out of the Chapel, the sun came out. We were able to shoot outside at a small lake right where Jennie & James had envisioned the "formal" photos taking place. Then it started raining again just as everyone arrived at the Reception.

Jennie & James had a Band called Horizon Orchestra play at their Reception. The leader of the band is Ray Novak, and he and his band mates are THE REAL DEAL. Best band we heard all season, hands-down. If you want a truly rocking reception, you want Horizon Orchestra at your wedding.

Another very memorable wedding we shot was at Searles Castle for Seth & Amy. Seth was my main point of contact for the day, as I never even spoke to Amy until the day of the wedding. I LOVE it when the Groom's get involved in the planning! And how awesome is Amy for letting Seth do that? She totally trusted him to plan the entire wedding and he did an amazing job. Amy is working on her own photography so I was happy to have been chosen by them as they both are very into photography as an art form.

Seth is Native American, and his entire family had to travel from Washington State to attend the wedding. In the following sequence of shots, Seth's Grandfather passed on his Native name-Red Heart-to Seth during his Best Man speech. I still can barely look at this moment without getting choked up. Just a very special moment that I'm so glad we were able to witness & capture.

We shot several weddings over at Gunstock resort in Gilford NH in 2010, which was right up our alley because Seth & I are avid skiers & riders. Riding the chairlift to attend the cocktail hour at Allison & Jeff's wedding was awesome.

Allison had some amazing shoes & was a beautiful Bride.

We also shot Jen &Tom's wedding at Gunstock just 2 weeks later. Jenn was another stunning Bride. Several images from both of these weddings are being used in the resort's advertisements. ;)

We headed on over to Flagg Hill winery in July. They've got some serious sunsets going on!

Because Justin & Jamie live in my home town of Meredith, after they hired me I got to pop-in and visit them whenever I was in town. It was wonderful getting to know them this summer. They got married at 3 Chimneys Inn in Durham.

We were lucky enough to spend several weekends at The Omni Mount Washington Hotel this year. What a Venue! Even after shooting 5 weddings there within 2 months, I know I have barely scratched the surface of possibilities.
First was David & Amanda. A 19 person wedding! We had a great time with this very intimate wedding.

The huge windows all over the Hotel allow for some pretty amazing natural light, even in the hallways and bathrooms.

Next up is Lindsey & Zach. Lindsey & I shot a really fun session together prior to the wedding that showcased her new Certification as a Yogi. Zach was finishing Medical School so their schedule was not working out for the BrideScapes shoot we had originally planned. We had some serious fun during that session. Lindsey was so honest in front of my camera about who she was that I knew her wedding images were going to be stunning.

We hit the weather jackpot on this PERFECT summer day in Northern NH!

.....And just one week later we got to back!

Our next wedding at the hotel was for Lindsey & Eric.

This fun Couple had just an incredible day, complete with every little detailed planned by Lindsey. We truly enjoyed working and planning with them every step of the way. What was super special about these 2 weddings is that I was able to introduce the 2 Lindsey's to each other (over email) and they got to do some of their planning together!

This first shot was a for an extensive, DIY place-card project that Lindsey had for the wedding. Cool concept and a stunning presentation!

Carrie at Dutch Blomen Winkle made some pretty stellar arrangements for Lindsey &Eric's wedding.

This may be the last shot of the old rug in the Hotel hallway...it was different for the wedding we shot the following week ;)

Purple Mountain Majesty!

We then headed down to the Seacoast to Wentworth by the Sea Country Club to shoot a Destination NH wedding for a Couple form Florida, Joel & Stephanie. THE most relaxed, laid-back couple EVER! Loved them. Still do. :) Stephanie's Mom walked her down the isle.

Then we headed back up to the white Mountains of Northern NH to shoot in this case, a Day-Before BrideScapes shoot with another Omni Mount Washington Resort couple Gwen & Pete. And believe us, we had absolutely no problem with that! Gwen had her entire family with her for the session-

And the wedding....

Gwen & Pete used a Rambo hunting knife to cut their cake. I'm still not quite sure what the story was behind the knife, but it made several appearances throughout the day, and we had some fun with it.

Reception was on the Terrace at the Omni Mount Washington Resort. Another killer sunset with Alpenglow!

We then got to sleep in our own bed after we shot Sorcha & Jason's wedding! They got married at the Bedford Village Inn, which is about 15 minutes from our house in Amherst. Sorcha & Jason had 2 prominent themes woven throughout their wedding: Sorcha's equestrian background and Jason's passion for cycling. We took those themes and ran with them; er, well, Sorcha's horse Scout did-when we shot a BrideScapes a few weeks later.....

And the BrideScapes.......I honestly don't know if anyone else will find this as intriguing as I do, but Scout-Sorcha's Horse- is Cisco's Great-Grand son! Cisco is the horse from Dances with Wolves. I am a die-hard fan of that movie so to me this was so cool. Did I mention that at times, I am a complete geek?

I miss Sorcha & Jason already. Very cool Couple.

We then got to take another trip up to Hanover, NH for Dan & Theresa's wedding at the Cheiftan Inn. Which is a road-side motel built in the 70's. But look what is behind the Inn...........

The CT River! And a gorgeous ceremony location! Theresa planned every last detail of this wedding, and Dan serenaded her with a love song; just an awesome, touching wedding. Oh! And I took my first "Dip"shot. I have been anti-dipping for a while, but Theresa & Dan talked me into it ;)

In September we returned to one of my favorite venues, The Exeter Inn. Just a beautifully renovated, Boston-style Hotel with class. Love it there. And Rose & Steve were-and still are-just stellar Clients. They opted to do a First Look just days before the wedding when they realized the time-line was way too tight for the Photography they wanted. Kudos to Rose for "going for it." ;)

Obviously I couldn't include images from all the weddings we shot here, nor could I keep up blogging weekly throughout the season. Getting images to our Clients in a timely manner was much more important. During the past few weeks of down time, I've really had the chance to reflect and re-focus for 2011. It's a good thing, because the season kicks off this Saturday! Holla!

Bedford Village Inn & BrideScapes® Sorcha & Jason!

I met Sorcha in Boston last year. We were down in Beantown for The Bayside Bridal Expo just checking into our Hotel when Sorcha called to inquire about our services. She was calling from the Melrose area, so I convinced her it would be a good idea to come down to the show to meet us. She did! ;) This was after I asked her how to pronounce her name about 50 times. (It's Sor Ka).

Sorcha & Jason opted to do a First Look which was AWESOME! The Bedford Village Inn has a beautiful, private garden right out back perfect for hiding people! It worked out great and we got some wonderful images. It also really took the stress off for Jason!

Sorcha & Jason blended her equine history with his love of biking throughout their entire wedding and BrideScapes® session. I think a lot of Couples struggle with details and how exactly they can incorporate a little piece of themselves into their wedding. Sorcha & Jason were really good at this! (See horseshoe placecards. Yay!

So....Sorcha is Irish. Not just the "I've got red-hair and live near Boston" kind of Irish but like REALLY Irish. As in she's been in the States for about 9 years. And as in there was a LOT of swearing in the Bridal suite which of course made me feel right at home ;)

This Cameo was Sorcha's Grandmother. Something Old...

The Weather was perfect.

We met Sorcha & Jason for a BrideScapes® shoot the end of October down at a State Park in Mass. We had some serious fun. And just for the record, the idea for this shoot came from Sorcha. She rules.

This was the only wedding we shot this year that allowed us to sleep in our own bed. But that was hardly the coolest thing about working with Sorcha & Jason. Well, since this post is about 1 line away from becoming one of those other sappy wedding blogs, I guess it's time to close.

The Mount Washington Hotel: Gwen & Pete and a really big cake-cutter

We spent a lot of time up at the Mount Washington Hotel this season. I just LOVE exploring all the nooks and crannies of every little hallway, window, and space. I've really barely scratched the surface of this incredible property.

Shooting IN the Hotel is almost like shooting outside. There's light pouring in everywhere! It's a dream.

I love Gwen's bouquet. Understated elegance-

Beautiful spot for a wedding on the South Veranda.

So Gwen & Pete had this really big knife.

I never did find out it's exact significance, but it was around for the entire event.

How could you not love all that this venue has to offer?

They set-up the Reception on the Jewell Terrace. There was some major Alpenglow happening!

Just amazing light coming from all directions...we made a bit of our own for this one too ;)

This not-so-secret corner has insane light morning, noon & night.

And then it got dark...

...and the knife came out again!

They danced well into the dark night.....

...Until the moon rose up! This is a hand-held shot with no tripod. No one told me I would be witnessing the sickest moon-rise ever!

NH White Mountains: Gwen's Family BrideScapes®

Gwen and Pete were planning their wedding at The Mount Washington Hotel on 8/28. They have been vacationing with their children in the White Mountains for quite some time, so they knew they wanted to do something special for a family photo shoot in the area.

Gwen was planning a Birthday party for her daughter the day-after the wedding, so we switched things up and did a day-before family BrideScapes® session.

And we had some fun!

I have images of Gwen clearly seen through the grass, but I like this image better.

The sun was strong and bright, an absolutely beautiful day in the mountains.

Gwen's son was very into the process; such a great kid to work with.

This is why I am a wide-angle lens junkie:

Mount Washington Hotel: Eric & Lindsey: Married!

Two weddings: Two beautiful weekends in a row: Two Lindsey's with incredibly similar last names. I introduced them via email and they became great friends while planning their weddings. Two of the Best Clients EVER!

Lindsey & Eric booked me a while ago. I knew they would be so much fun to work with because Eric carried Lindsey inside to our meting. I was right! This is just a quick sneak peak because I am still working on their wedding. More soon!

Mount Washington Hotel Bretton Woods: Sneak peak: Lindsey & Zach

I was lucky enough to shoot the wedding of Lindsey & Zach. And also lucky enough to be headed right back up to The Mt. Washington hotel this weekend to shoot the wedding of (another) Lindsey & Eric.

Here is a sneak peak of the day before I head north once again.

The best light on the entire property is in the bathrooms. Don't believe it? (See below to be convinced).

Considering the fact that Mt. Washington is in the clouds 300+ days a year.....The Weather Gods were with us:

Lindsey & Zach had an amazing, unique Russian Othordox Ceremony.

After we shot some big family formals, we had Warlock (aka Jim) one of the valet van drivers at the Mt. Washington set us free. Lindsey & Zach were up for anything. I love it when that happens!

When the sun set Saturday night it put on a show: good thing Seth convinced me to go back out because I had checked it out only moments before and nothing was going on.

Gunstock Mountain Resort: Allison & Jeff: Married!

Allison & Jeff tied the knot in my home town of Meredith at St. Charles Church. There were beautiful flowers adorning the Church which were designed by Paula Rae, the Owner of Rae Florae out of Ocean Beach, California. This was a Destination NH wedding, so Allison & Jeff brought all of their friends from California; Paula happens to be a good friend of Allison's as well as a "Best of The Knot" award winning florist.

There were incredible lupine blooming in the church parking lot right near a giant granite boulder so that's where we shot "formals" before heading by trolly over to Gunstock Mountain Resort.

Paula worked her magic here as well and The Chicken Slacks out of Boston added some soul to the evening.

I decided to do a slide-show for this wedding so enjoy all of the eye candy from this wedding below!

Mt. Washington Hotel Bretton Woods: David & Amanda: Married!

Seth & I had the pleasure of shooting this intimate, 20 person wedding at the Mount Washington Hotel last weekend. While it poured rain all morning and was windy and a tad chilly, the weather held enough to allow the ceremony to take place on the South Veranda.

We will be shooting at the Mt. Washington several times this summer, and this Venue is large enough that if I shot there every weekend I would still find new territory to explore, both outside & in. The Mt. Washington is like no other, and is the Pinnacle for service, scenery, and a true "Grand" experience in New Hampshire's north country.

Did I mention that the light in the bathroom is downright dreamy? I'm going to shoot a BrideScapes® in the shower. It will happen!

Just look at Amanda in this light. Amanda was so poised, beautiful and peacefully elegant. At times it was just her & I while she was getting ready as her maid of Honor stepped in & out. We worked together in silence at times and this is what happened:

I just want to share that this next image is 100% RAW data direct from my camera. That's not a vignette; it's natural fall-off and a slight shadow that the window frame created. You don't need to mess with anything that looks like this.

I grabbed the rings while Seth went to get some pre-ceremony shots with the guys. More great light on the Mt. Washington's windowsills.

And these 2 shots below are an excellent example of why you benefit from having 2 Photographers at your wedding---even a small, intimate 20 person wedding. This is the same exact moment in time from 2 different angles. I'm out front and Seth got the close-up of Amanda's first tear.

Seth is Native American and although he currently lives in NH, the majority of his family lives on a Reservation in Washington State. Amy is Irish so there was some really interesting mixing of cultures, traditions, and decor. One thing is for certain: Seth & Amy had a "fairy-tale" inspired wedding theme complete with butterfly & dove releases, a horse-drawn carriage, and lots of crying. Oh no wait, that was me. ;)

This was Seth's (My Seth not the Groom's) Creative Concept and he set-up this ring shot for me:

We also worked together on this dress shot. The room was of course packed crowded, and cluttered. Seth used an off-camera flash to illuminate the dress in the mirror.

Alright, I need to preface these next few shots by telling a little story. Whenever I read other blogs, I just about gag at the mention of tears, crying, and getting choked up. Because really, when you do this every single weekend it's easy to focus on your work and step outside of the very special moments that are going on around you; that's how great imagery is made. But if you think I was able to hold it together completely while Seth's Grandfather passed on his Native name, Red Heart, to him during his Best man speech well then, you would be WRONG!

Then Seth and his whole Family started chanting (more crying ).

I've simply never seen anything like this or been as moved by someone I don't know personally as I was by this. I wasn't the only one! Really!

Congrats Seth &Amy! Thank you for letting us capture you day. It was a true honor!

I've been dying to get the chance to work with Amy Piper of Signature Events out of Wolfeboro, NH, so when she called and asked me to cover the event I jumped at the chance. The Knot has been a HUGE part of my business growth over the last couple of years, so I am a big fan of the site. We kicked off the 2010 Wedding Season on the Dartmouth College Campus with Jenny & James. Jenny's dad works at the College so she grew up spending lots of time on Campus.
James is a big sports buff so this is how he and his guys prepared for the ceremony.
It was POURING rain all morning and afternoon as we headed to the Chapel.
I'm known for my outdoor work, but with all the beautiful churches we get to photograph this season, I have really been getting into the architectural lines and designs of these beautiful buildings.
There were 3 Large skylights in the top of the Chapel that let the natural light through: A Photographer's Dream.

No one likes to shoot flash in a church....just look at this light!

James' brothers were Co-Best Men and they gave one of the best speeches --EVER.

As we came out of the Chapel the sky cleared. The timing had to be divine intervention. Jenny had us all bussed to a Lake on Campus. Beautiful spot for photos!

Entertainment at the reception was provided by Horizon Orchestra. INSANE, AMAZING, INCREDIBLY talented BAND! If I were getting married next week-that's who I would hire. Horizon is out of Boston. Do it!

Rose & Steve: Engaged!

Rose & Steve are getting married at The Exeter Inn in September. The Inn is a Boston-style hotel on the NH Seacoast that has AMAZING food and incredible BEDS! I have never slept better. You better believe I will be spending the night there after shooting Rose & Steve's wedding!

Steve's parents came along as did his daughter Riley. And I was SO glad! Steve's Parents were troopers as I walked through, up, over, and around the muddy banks of the Souhegan River. Riley was such a cutie and knew exactly what to do to make her dad smile ;)
I am so PUMPED that there are endless spots for great shooting where I live. I make it a point to never shoot the same location twice. I doubt that there's many Photographer's that take this quite as seriously as I do. Once I've shot a location or a specific concept, I never go back to it.

Did I mention that this location was scouted by Seth? He is the MASTER!

Kicking Off 2010! Lindsey's Yoga Session

With the very busy season I have ahead of me, I have put myself on a strict schedule in order to offer my Clients the best possible service. Editing and processing my Clients images immediately after their wedding in order to ensure a quick turn-around time is always my #1 goal. Because of this, the blog has been neglected! But no more! I'm caught up for May so it is time to share what has been happening here at Stephanie Wales Photography.

Lindsey is one of my July 2010 Brides and she is getting married at The Mount Washington Hotel. She originally had booked me for a BrideScapes® Creative Imagery Session. However because Lindsey's Fiance Zach is finishing up Medical School and they will be coming back to NH for only a short time around the time of wedding, things are going to be a bit hectic for them to say the least. So Lindsey asked me if I would be willing to do a creative Concept shoot for her featuring her Yoga as she just completed her training and certification as a Yoga teacher.

I am ALWAYS up for anything new or Creative so of course I said yes! We headed to a local Farm in Amherst for some nice wide field shots. I'd been dying to shoot the dilapidated barn across the road as well, so once we determined no one was home we went for it. The tunnel shots were so perfect for what we were trying to accomplish with this shoot; I'll just let those speak for themselves.

Ode to 2009; Looking Ahead now that my Taxes are done ;)

The 2009 wedding season is gone, and since I am done with my advertising and magazine submissions featuring this work, I decided to write this blog post to say goodbye to what was a very big season of growth for me.

Most importantly, this season I figured out that in order to stand out in the sea of wedding photographers (even here in little NH), all I really had to do was be myself. The unveiling of my BrideScapes® Creative Imagery sessions was HUGE. I knew I wanted to shoot Day-After imagery, but I certainly was not content with trashing wedding gowns for no apparent reason. These shoots remind me of my film shooting days. They blend my love of the NH Landscape with Bridal photography. I like the shoots to be highly collaborative. I am now booking these shoots for more than just my wedding Clients. People who were not happy with their original wedding imagery call me. Husband & Wives call me. Happily unmarried in love people ask for them too. ;)

I shot half as many weddings last year as I will shoot this year, and I will without a doubt be limiting the number of assignments I shoot moving forward. This allows my Clients to get the best possible service and turn-around time possible. I am NOT a wedding photography factory and I don't want to be-EVER.

The industry is certainly changing and the competition increases daily. I feel confident that I am offering the finest NH Artistic wedding photography available. I will strive for even greater imagery at each and every wedding in 2010.

If I can continue to inspire the type of reaction to my work that was happening this past season, it will make me a very happy girl.

New for this year I will be offering a "Wedding Day Boudoir" session, which will allow brides to have this extra special gift for the new Husbands without having to find the time for a separate session. These 45 minute wedding-day boudoir sessions will take place during the Bride's Preparation, and will flow seamlessly with the events of the day.

The summer of 2010 will be a very, very busy time. I welcome it, embrace it, and very much look forward to it!

Jennie & Derek were so fun to work with! We had such a good time shooting their wedding. Jennie & Derek did a quickie BrideScapes® the morning after the wedding. They had to drive all the way back to Virgina where Derek was stationed. They were wiped out form the wedding festivities, but they were very into their photography so we still managed to make some incredible images in a little under an hour.

High Resolution Files and a FULL copyright release

This is what I do for every single one of my wedding clients. If you are going to pay thousands of dollars for your wedding photography, I think you should have your pictures; in fact I think you should OWN THEM.

My clients help me create imagery; they are just as much a part of the creative process as I am. Although I have ALWAYS given my clients a high-resolution disc of their digital negatives, new for 2010 I will be giving all of my clients a FULL copyright release which will effectively transfer the ownership of the images from me to my clients. I will retain the right to display the images on my blog and website, but my clients can rest easy knowing that their images won't show up somewhere they don't want them to.

Although many photographers will claim that they only give low-res files because they want their clients enlargements printed on professional grade paper (purchased through them of course), the fact is that printing technologies have advanced to the point where most retailers and local photo labs offer full color correction services and the person you are hiring to photograph your wedding should be color correcting their images themselves. Charging extra for the high-resolution files makes absolutely no sense to me; in fact I think it is an ethical issue. If you are searching for a wedding photographer, ask them about their policies with regard to YOUR digital negatives.

Lindsey & Eric are getting married next summer at the Mount Washington Hotel on the new sick Jewell Terrace. Obviously a Photographer's background dream, the fact is that what really matters is in the foreground. Look at these 2 LoveBirds.

We started the shoot at this cool old barn in Amherst. (Knocked on the home owners door at 8:30AM on a Saturday morning. He said YES). Thanks to him-

Ok so this tree. This is the tree I talked Lindsey & Eric into trying to get into. I saw a ladder, but upoin further investigation, the "ladder" was about 100 years old and instantly dissingrated the moment Eric touched it. He easily lifted Lindsey into the tree, but it was getting sketchy trying to get him into it so we abandon our plan. Thankfully they did not at all let the dissapointment of getting stellar images in the tree damper our session. We owned that tree!

You just CANNOT go wrong with a red barn in NH.

We moved on down the road to a cool old railroad bed.

During this part of the shoot Eric was talking about how much he loves NH. Eric & Lindsey live in the city (Boston) but they completely relax when they head North. Eric said he wants to go to a diner where everybody knows his name.

We then headed over to the Souhegan River right next to a beautiful town-owned field less than 1 mile from my studio. Why mess around with fake backgrounds when you've got this going on outside?

Lindsey is strategically placing her body to cover up the "Ozzy Rules" writen on the stairs.

Christina & Keith got married 10-17-10 on a GLORIOUS day at The White Mountain Hotel in North Conway, NH.

I met this awesome couple at The Mountain View Grand the previous year. We shot their engagement images on Cathedral Ledge over the summer, and we returned to the Ledge for their formal portraits.

I'm way behind on blog posts and lots of other things, so this post is all about the pics, and of course the lovely people in them.

OK Christina's Grandmother made her Dress: ALL of it: BY HAND!!!!!!!!

This ruffle she put on at the last minute after seeing something similar in a magazine. Isn't it amazing?

The more Christina cried, the harder I had to try not to.

Engaged! Justin & Jamie; Location: Plymouth, NH

Justin & Jamie are the cutest little young couple who, ironically, actually live right down the street from my parents and the house I grew up in-weird huh?!

They met while attending Plymouth State, got engaged on campus and Justin now works there. So, it was only fitting that they wanted to shoot their engagement session on campus.

I showed up in shorts, and it was about 38 degrees out. I like the Fall NE weather.

We started the shoot right near where we parked, on some nice granite steps.

From there, we neared the scene of the crime where Justin actually asked Jamie to marry him. I made them (it wasn't hard) re-enact the engagement, but I'm keeping those pics for their private viewing ;)

I'm always thinking "backgrounds" when I'm shooting whether there is blur or not, so this multi-colored autumn ivy fit the bill for a few shots.

And a realitively cheesy Fall shot that just happened- I swear!

Justin and Jamie weren't going for the GQ or Cosmo look; they just wanted to be themselves- real people who just happen to be in love!

Sullivan Wedding 10-03-09 The Exeter INN

Class. Sophisitcation. Amazing service. These are the words I would use to describe Karen & Chris' wedding at The Exeter Inn.

I loved all of the textures and deep rich colors throughout the lobby of the Inn, and the wedding halls are a nice, smooth, rich creamy color.

Did I mention that this INN has THE most comfortable beds I have EVER slept in? The turndown service whereby WARM chocolate chip cookies are placed by your bedside isn't too shabby either........

Karen added a gazillion candles to the room which my camera loved ;)

Karen & Chris decided to do a Day-After BrideScapes® shoot after their wedding at the AMAZING Exeter Inn. Karen wanted to visit Fuller Botanical Gardens on the Rye/Hampton border, as well as the cute little chapel right accross the street. We started the shoot there before heading over to several beaches in Rye as well as Ordiorne Point State Park.

Cynthia & Tony: Manchester Country Club

Let's start with the rings.

I have been having a LOT of fun with the ring shots lately. I Love, love, love using my surroundings to do something new at each wedding. This is serious fun for me.

Now I have to tell you all about Cynthia and Tony. I met this couple at a Bridal Show last winter and we immediately hit is off. I wanted to shoot their wedding, and I am so glad I was given the opportunity. Their children were all so beautiful and excited about the wedding that they were easy to photograph. (Evidence below). Love using my photos as evidence!

Cynthia & Tony met in the park before their ceremony in Merrimack so it was nice to have all of the photos done before the ceremony. Most of my couples so not see each other so this was a real treat for me.

Although I certainly consider my work to be Artistic in nature, I always try to give my couples some super-standard timeless portraits. Onward to the country club.....

Gavin & Jane: International Engagement Shoot

You won't see any pictures on this blog post, because Gavin & Jane requested that I not post their photos on my blog or website. They are both very private people, and Jane has a security-sensitive job.

They traveled over to New England for a long weekend from England (yes, a long weekend-3 days!) and Jane found me on http://www.theknot.com/. They met me at the office in Amherst, and we headed to a location here in town that I had scouted prior to their arrival.

I knew that Gavin & Jane were here for the leaves, so I obtained permission from a private property owner who owns a beautiful field along the Souhegan River that had beautiful trees blooming color all over the place. There was also some nice high grass that made for some really nice shots as well.

As we started the session, Jane informed me that they were both very stiff and that they were so not professional models. I beg to differ! Beyond simply instructing them to relax, have fun, and to do whatever they felt like doing, this couple help me make some extrodinary imagery.

Meghan & Chris 9-19-09 Milan, NH

So I traveled North-WAY north, to Milan, NH for Meghan & Chris' wedding. The wedding was held at Meghan's Parent's house, a beautiful Farm/Inn Property with some serious potential to be an increadibly note-worthy wedding venue in Northern NH.

Meghan's Mom used to be the wedding coordinator at Sunday River in Maine, so as you can imagine, things we set up, ready to go, and running smoothly when the day began.

Chris and Meghan's dad finshed this beautiful arbor just in time. The were still working on it the night before the wedding.

Is this an increadible setting or what?

This was an amazing wedding to shoot because there was so much space! We were able to move freely throughout the "venue" without disturbing anyone. It was increadible to have the wind blowing all around us on the huge lawn. Meghan emailed me when she & Chris returned from their honeymoon and to Thank us for being so unobtrusive. Meghan, Chris, and their entire families made this easy for us because they simply enjoyed their special day.

I wanted the ring shot to show the grand LandScape, and then I kept seeing the sparkle on the ring when the sun would hit it just right. I knew if I were patient, I would get it. I did. ;)

Jennie & Derek 9-5-09

So I last left off with some pictures of Jennie looking absolutely STUNNING in her baby-doll wedding dress preparing for the beach ceremony in Freedom, NH at Derek's family's private cottage.
Seth got to watch and shoot the guys getting ready. Because Derek is a Marine, this took longer than usual, so I was able to go in and observe and take some pics as well. I LOVED watching how seriously these guys were putting on their uniforms. The care and attention to detail is not something you see in groom's quaters at most weddings.

Crystal and Charlie had a beach-themed wedding and they took it to the next level as they got married on a beach towell. Pretty Hard-Core, huh? Crystal looked amazing and Charlie was the easiest Groom to Photograph-ever! Not to mention he wears cool shoes.

Unfortunately, it poured buckets the day of their wedding, so we "had" to move inside to one of the most beautiful buildings in the entire region, The historic Belknap Mill in Laconia, NH.

I am shooting more & more details these days and love it. It's the details that will bring back the memories in years to come.

BrideScapes-Not your typical "Trash"

I recently started shooting a series of artstic concept "Day After" shoots called BrideScapes (tm). It began as a take-off of the "Trash the Dress" trend, but who really likes the word "Trash?" Especially if you're a Bride who cares about your gown, regardless of its price? Not to mention the image(s) that the word "Trash" provokes. After viewing hundreds of trendy "Trash" images (some in junkyards, railroad tracks, fields), I realized that I could combine my love of NH LandScapes with my love of Bridal Photography.My question to the Members of this group, both Brides and Vendors, is do you see a market for this type of expression? What type of client/Bride would be feeling adventureous enough to want to have truly unique artistic images made after their wedding?My husband made a great analogy last night, and I just have to share it:
If you could drive a $150,000.00 sports car of your dreams for 1 day and 1 day only, would you drive around a busy crowded street at the speed limit or below? Would you want to spend the entire day sitting in traffic? Or would you want to let that baby loose out on an open road, where you could go as fast as you wanted to?
Getting a dress wet or dirty is not a big deal. Rips could be a problem though.......

Great Wedding Last Weekend!

I had a blast shooting the Donovan wedding in Londonderry last Saturday June 9th. The United Methodist Church has by far the coolest, most laid-back Man-of-the-Cloth I have ever met!

Kari looked beautiful and her husband Ryan was wonderful to shoot as well, with a great sense of humor. Here are a few of my favorite pics of the day.

I've been creatively seeking a way to combine my 2 main passions in photography, Bridal and Landscapes. I also like to shoot barns. So for my newest venture, I've created BrideScapes. These post-wedding sessions are simliar to a "Trash the Dress" Style shoot, but who really wants to trash their dress? Let's face it, gowns are expensive. Some Brides really want to explore the concept and will get right down in the mud for me, but others just want to be in a field and have a much freer feeling shoot after the wedding that allows them to really relax and express more of themselves than they possibly ever could on the wedding day.

Check out the Bridescape gallery on my webpage. I am doing a session with a couple this weekend; yes, the Groom wants to play! They will be swimming in the River for this one so there are sure to be some stellar images.

Thriving Part 2

So I as ventured out to the Bridal Shows this year, I got a good feel for what other "Photographers", although I think the term Vendors is more appropriate (this will make more sense soon, keep reading) had to offer and what their prices and policies were.

The first thing I noticed is that there is one company that is at every show, and as a general rule the vendors offering photographic services are broken up into 2 categories:

1.) Big Sub-Contractors who have 10-20 "photographers" "working" for them ( they hire people as needed so as never to turn down a job);

2.) Smaller, self-owned outfits (like me).

The big guys do a lot of volume, the smaller guys have there own niche clientel. As I walk around the room, the photographs of all vendors look very, very similar. Color spalshes and spot-tones abound, while blantly obvious photoshop work is highlighted as well. Many of the shots are at non-tradtional angles, and the work takes on a more artistic look and abstract feel.

The competition is intense, as there were 9 Photographers at the show I did this past weekend.

So why will people choose me? How can I market myself when there are so many options available to Brides? What makes me different?

Thriving in a dead-beat economy: I'm doing it. (Part 1 of a 3-Part Series)

I started taking pictures when I was 13 years old. I fell madly in love with the photographic process. In the mid- 80's this consisted of hand-developing all of my work: shaking exposed film in a metal canister (after rolling it onto the developing spool in a black bag), and hanging it up to dry with a clothes pin. I would then spend hours upon days in the dark room in HS and College, not seeing the sun for days at a time. I was a dark-room, print my own photos addict.

I was slow to switch to digital, because I shot a lot of Landscapes and was rarely under tight deadlines for this type of Fine Art work.

After shooting many weddings for friends, I finally decided about 2 years ago to start marketing myself for weddings specifically; right around the time the economy started to tank.

I had no studio, lots of high-end film gear but knew I would need to go fully digitized to be profitable. Keeping my overhead low to non-existent would be the key to my success. I've never even considered studio work because it is not my cup of tea. I love natural light and being outside, and "living in the moment" shooting for me is where it's at.

So I launched Stephanie Wales Photography. What happened next?

Lakes Region Bride Show a success despite snowy weather

Approximately 50 Brides were at this show. I think everyone was happy with the turn out considering the substantial snowfall recieved overnight. Many of the vendors barely made it on time and a 5o car pile-up to the South didn't help.

If you were at the show, you saw me taking pictures of the BEAUTIFUL models from A Day To Remeber Boutique in Concord. Helen from the shop is increadible and all of her models were extremely knowledgable about the designers they were wearing. They all ate up the camera and I could not have been happier to have been stationed right in front of them.

Yes, I was there to promote my services, but I spent a great deal of time photographing the fashions, because I LOVE to take pictures.
